Parque Etxebarria

Man’s ability to shape his environment is beyond amazing and at times very sad. A beautiful prairie can be converted into nothing but farmland and cities in a matter of decades. However, humans are also capable of helping the land convert back into what it once was once they realize how important nature really is. Something like that happened in Bilbao to Parque Etxebarria. It had been the site of a steel factory until the city decided to begin moving away from being industrial in the 1980s. The park is wonderfully green and you get an amazing view of the city. A single chimney reminds Bilbao of what was originally in that spot (unfortunately I did not take a picture of it). You have to climb a lot of stairs in Casco Viejo to reach the park but in my opinion it’s worth it, especially when you know the history of the site.
